It’s Mother’s Day!
By Jason Spear - May 13, 2012 | No Comments“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me.” I’m sure that most of us are familiar with this elementary school wisdom, having heard it from either are parents or friends at such a young age. And yet here I sit, a 23-year-old college senior, starting off his blog with this nursery rhyme. Why you ask? Well, recently I have put a lot of thought into this saying after using it as a comforting tool for my daughter. It seems obvious why our parents told us this when we were young. Name calling may be hurtful, but don’t believe everything that someone tells you. I think that this rhyme was used to help us develop a positive self-esteem. And as I... -
Working Towards Our Goals
By Danielle Newcombe - May 2, 2012 | No CommentsAs you all know, bikini season is right around the corner. This is the time of year when people really start to buckle down and get their butts in shape! For me, absolutely, I’m focused on getting that ideal bikini body that every girl dreams of; but I, along with the rest of the volleyball team, am also working towards that ideal volleyball body. Sure, we’d like to look good while playing; but we want to be good while we’re playing. Last spring season, the weightlifting was not as strict; this year, we’re putting in work. We start off our weeks with team lifting Mondays. The team lifting is supervised by our assistant coach. It’s always fun to have all of us in a weight... -
A Day With Sandra Cisneros
By Angie Davalos - May 1, 2012 | No CommentsI have never met someone who, along with success, brings advice and inspiration. This is the case of Sandra Cisneros. The SMSU Women’s Resource Center, along with the English Department, the Felix Valdez Reading Series, Ethnic Studies Committee and Ethnic Studies Student Organization, brought the wonderful and talented Sandra Cisneros to our California State University, San Bernardino campus. The event began with a wonderful introduction by Janet Honn-Alex to Yazmin Wheelock, the WRC Graduate Assistant. After Wheelock introduced Sandra Cisneros with a list of achievements, publications, and qualities that she possesses, the magic began. Cisneros started off by singing a song by Lola Beltran to which most of the audience sang along. Cisneros then continued to read an excerpt of “Caramelo” in both English and... -
Motivation Comes From Within
By Jason Spear - April 25, 2012 | No CommentsAs unbelievable as it may be for some, including this procrastinating student, the quarter is almost half over. That’s right; we are almost in the fifth week of classes. But don’t worry fellow students because even if you are behind like me there is still time to catch up. And in an effort to help focus your minds on the tasks that lie ahead that we so very much want to ignore while we enjoy the spring weather, I would like to share some insights that I have found helpful. The following technique is actually something I picked up towards the end of last quarter. I got the idea from fellow blogger Emily Campbell after reading her blog Feeling Forgetful. Emily suggests making “To-Do Lists”... -
What I’m Afraid Of
By Vincent Ledesma - April 25, 2012 | No CommentsI am afraid. I am afraid of what is supposed to happen next. I have been a college student for going on 11 years and am now close enough to graduation that I need to start figuring out what my next step is supposed to be. Well, actually, I kind of already know what my next step is supposed to be; I am supposed to get a job. But where? Any time I open the paper to look at the classifieds the listings are depressingly short. The other night on Fox News they had a report on the trouble that college graduates are having after graduation and that only makes me more nervous about my situation. Sitting in class on...
